El Reg are reporting that the previously mentioned second coming of Christ (in phone form) will be retailing, Pay As You Go, for the still outrageous but not completely unattainable $599 (8GB) and $699 (16GB). So, a glimmer of hope there. Though I sometimes find myself more in agreement with this guy on the features front.
